The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO (proud of being a professional), decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, 'What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?' He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: 'Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.' To stress his point he said to another guest; 'You're a teacher, Mary. Be honest. What do you make?'
Mary, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, 'You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began...)
'Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Medal of Honor.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental.
You want to know what I make?' (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)

I make them question.
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions.
I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything.

'Mary paused one last time and then continued,then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant..... I would like to respond to the fuss created in the fb by our own teachers over the event on 24/04/2010 :

Clear instruction have been given during Bicara Pagi that students are not allowed to use the lift, but to use the stairs to carry tables & chairs and the number of lifts that will operate on the day. It was the decision of Hari Keusahawanan meeting that the tables and chairs are to be taken from classes and to be limited to 5 tables.

I am deeply saddened by the tables and chairs that left behind. At 3pm yesterday, En Bahrin was still trying to gather the tables and chairs around the school compound that i hope was not left by the PPU students, what an irresponsible act.

If the younger students can send all their tables and chairs back after that to their respective classes why can't the PPU students do so? The class teachers and students should plan earlier and work together, let's do a simple calculation, if you have 20 students and need to move up 10 tables, 2 students take 1 table up to 4th floor, you need only 1 trip (don't give me the excuse that it is too heavy for 2 girls to carry one table up to 4th floor, think of it that most schools have no lift), It is your choice of the number of tables to be used by you (we had US3 last year who moved more than 100 tables using the staircase, that showed the determination of the students). What happened yesterday was that some classes cleared too late where most students have gone and left too few students to clear the after match.

We would like to instil in our students the right moral value 'to serve the school'. It is wrong to say that the students do this for the school as we should remember this is the programme for the students, everybody is going to benefit from the fun collected. Hari keusahawan is the time for them to learn to be futere entrepreneur, if they plan the game well, they should be able to recover back part of their money from 30% that they earned (example : 30% of RM1500 earned by US2 = RM450 that is 57% of RM780 paid by 26 students. Puan Mazani's class US2 last year fully recover all the money paid)

I sympathy to the US1 students whose bags had been ransacked and Tun who has lost her bag and all her belonging including digital camera, we know in the right mind that this thing should not have happened, the same goes to the logic that : we forget to lock our door, it does not mean somebody has the right to take our things. But there is always people with sick mind that will harm us. Students please protect your belongings and not to leave valuable things unattended. If things like this happen i just don't know what i can help other than making a report.

Other then above say, all went well and kudos to everybody for the job welldone !!! Thank you.

HAPPY DUMPLING DAY

It has been 27 years since I left my hometown and tomorrow is my mom's memorial day, I miss her dearly....

My late mother was a very traditional chinese woman that her years were full of all kinds of festive celebrations. For every 5th day of fifth lunar calender month, she will take out all her old stuff (things that travelled with her from china long time ago) to sun, it seems that today is the hottest day in a year, she will sun a big baldi of water at noon time and then boil it with all kinds of leaves collected from the trees behind our house and boil with eggs too, I still remember the aroma of the water that we later use to bathe and the eggs we ate. According to my mum, by doing so we will stay healthy for the rest of that year. She will then mix the rice wine and a kind of orange powder and spray it around the house and put around our nose and ears that will prevent the little bugs from going in. I never practise all this but i do remember them every year.

I am glad that you all turned up today and had a dip in the pool, it is always my pleasure to be your host...

It had been a hectic week even though the holiday started a week ago, before more work coming next week, we had a 3 day 2 night get away to Kuantan, it was sunny with blue sky and wide ocean as oppose to KL, no internet and no handphone ringing.

Chee Soon has made some internet survey for good food in Kuantan, so we had curry noodle at Hoi Yin @ Teluk Cempedak; Tom Yam @ Restoran Kampung and scrumptious seafood dinner by the Berserah seaside @ PAKSU, lost our way and take quite some time to reach there, but it proved to be worth it, plenty of crabs, shells, prawns, oyster, yummy, yummy, hope that Eu Jin with us, as eu nis and xuan don’t really enjoy seafood.

On Eu Xuan invitation, attended Ampang Road Girl School 39th International Understanding Day at Wisma Chinese Chamber. My first IU Day, was proud with the girls, they are mostly F2 - 5 and was able to put up such a good show. Wonder why our PPU students don't do it, it must be such fun.

I remember that I once attended a counseling course, the speaker mentioned about a syndrome that some people have, especially those who were successful in one stage of their life, they remain in that stage and refuse to grow. For example: A Miss Universe, a sportsman, a student who scored full As... they lived in the past, their glorious year, they complain about their present and they cannot take their present failure, their present shape, that’s why some famous people kill themselves.

I hope this does not happen to my students, you are still young, of course you had a good time during your secondary school years, your good achievement, your good buddies,… but now that you are in a new school, meeting new friends, are facing a new stpm, do look at things in a more mature manner, be part of your present, be involved,… If you have achieved good results during your SPM (where most of you have), make sure you keep improving yourselves in STPM, then your higher education, your career, your life.

If you complain now, the chances are you will complain about your university, your workplace, your country, your husband/wife, your life, we don’t want that to happen because you are our future generation. Let put it this way: Ask yourself what you can contribute first before what you can get…

As a Cochranean, SMK Cochrane is my second home.

In life there are always undesirable things, so in order to feel better you just need to look at life from another direction and appreciate and be thankful for each beautiful day.

Reflection from Mathematics T Monthly Test Result

With the advancement in technology, it is amazing that you are able to read somebody’s diary without her knowledge and get hurt.

Being a teacher for more than 20 years, I always think that I give my best to my students but started to feel demoralizing that in their heart they actually … no appreciation, but they will think you are merely paid to do the job.

As a Buddhist myself, I believe in one has to set their mind right before sweet speech and action.

I did my reflection: Was it my mistake to mark the paper too fast and spoilt the students’ holiday mood? Was it my mistake not to scold them for their poor performance? I was actually equally disappointed with the result.

If you are not doing fine in the test, ask yourself why? Do you pay attention in the class? Do you do enough revision? Are you focusing while doing revision? Or you are blogging / face booking too much? Going out too often? Blaming other /self pity too much? Just like what Datuk Astaman said, in life, you are in control of 90% of what you are doing and only 10% are beyond your control.

I suggest you set a good timetable, put away computer, be positive, be focus, say a prayer in the morning, jot down your goal for the day and work on it, then you should be fine. If you have problem doing it, set a date to see Counselor, Puan Kang will be there to help you. Come and consult the teachers, we will glad to help you and give you full support.

Remember there are no stupid student, but there always lazy students.

TO MY STUDENTS

I wish to welcome back all my beloved students to the new school year. We are already well into the 4th week, and the first month is going to end soon.

Many events had happened, and many mixed emotions were shared amongst us.

Rules are set to follow, to ensure that things will be in order, and I want to give you, the PPU students, more freedom, but due to some cases, in which the guilty students were caught red-handed : such as eating in the class, eating in level 7, staying in the classroom during recess time, books and chess sets gone missing, etc. These inadequate actions had angered the disciplinary board. You are the eldest batch of students in the school and we have set certain expectations on you, and realizing this, you are all supposed to be the role models to the younger batch of students in our school. Even spot checks have been pre-warned, but yet many were caught for not obeying the rules (not having buku koko, buku peraturan and buku catatan). Even to get you to sit in your own row during the assembly is such a hassle, I wonder why can’t you follow even the simplest of rules.

All this while, I had been jotting down the information I get from assemblies, meetings, daily chores, R&D, colloquiums, from books I had read, from people I met, … knowledge and information can be found all around us, that is the reason why we want you to have a note book with you at all times, yet you are still sitting empty handed. As the old saying goes: I see and I forget, I hear and I remember, I do and I understand.

Some of you are still in the world of being paranoid (mentally-blocked), always in a mental state in which anything and everything seems not right to you : the teachers, the school rules, the classroom, the extra-curricular activities, the computer room, the canteen, the break times …. My advice to you students : Always look at things in their positive sides, try to make most out of the situation, so that your stay in Cochrane will make you a better person in future.

I have visited the Taylor’s College New Lakeside Campus, and in my heart how I wish my students can have that kind of facilities, but do you know how much the parents have to pay? > RM9000 for one semester and you are paying only RM200++ in a year. That is when reality sets in. Even we teachers are struggling to make do in a crowded 7th floor, but thanks to all my PPU teachers in 7th floor, in spite of having to leave the comfortable staff room in 6th floor, all of them remained positive. I am not saying that being a Government School we are substandard, because as teachers, we always try to give our best to our students.

As for extra curriculum activities and school program, it is stated that all of you are compulsory to participate in all three areas: uniform groups, societies and games, and it will make up 10% of your university entry qualification. It is our duty to stress this to you, to tell you how to score as high as possible so that all of you would be able to secure a spot in a university next year and not regret later on in life because of this 10%. But I noticed that those who frequently complain are always the inactive students. Whenever there is a school program, they are the ones who are absent to the program. As what I said the other day, you have to be involved to make your presence felt, or else school would mean nothing more than a place for you to study in. How active a club is depends on how active the member wants it to be, so are you still expecting teachers to push you? Plan and be involved, don’t do it because you are force to but be enjoyed. Be proactive. I won’t hesitate to support you on any good program.

PPU_Lower 2009 Final Year Exam Result

All the results have been sent out yesterday (07-12-2009), and they should reach you by these two days, that is the testimony of your effort for the last six months. If you don't do well, then this is the time for you to catch up with what you have learnt. If you are satisfied with your result, then keep it up.

For my math students, don't forget your research, start it now, touch up when school reopens, then you won't complain of stress as work had been given out earlier. Work that has to be done, has to be done. If you need help, you can consult me by mail.

04/12/2009 - Going Green

I think this happened in many household and this is an untold reality :

I visited a friend's house today, and it had been drizzling whole day, but the air conds were working in full force in all the rooms. It seems that they have altered the meter and the monthly bill comes to as low as RM20, that's less than 10% of my little apartment's, so amazing. They had to on all the air conds in order to achieve RM20, or else the authority might be suspicious, then they will be in trouble.

To me this is morally not right, and you are doing big harm to our mother earth ....

I am trying to persuade my class to do awareness camping on environmental issue, so i myself do some data collection on the number of plastic bags used in a household, and this is what i get :

26/12/2009 (Thursday) A weekly trip to nearby pasar malam

10 plastic bags, 2 plastic cups, 2 foam boxes

even a butter cake with 10 individual plastic bags

the poppiah comes with chilli wrap in little plastic bag

The nasi lemak comes with plastic spoons

All of them went into the dusbin at the end of the day because the plastic bags are thin and small, so they don't qualify to be reuse as rubbish bag.

I am old , fat and bald, ....

I wanted to be young, thin and attractive too ....

but why can't the students be more grateful and appreciate me more ....

Finally it is the end of term, time passes so fast and there are still many things not done yet... Due to the new job, there is nothing great about the holidays anymore, after all I have to be in the school most of the time, sorting out problems that arises now and then, tending to things that are not really my interest...

But i have some time to read some blogs, ... sorry-- some students' blogs, i hope you don't feel invaded (Eu Xuan said blogs are for people to read, if not don't publish it).

One said ... "PPU teachers if not fat, then are old, or bald... and poor in teaching" Gosh, is that how you term your teachers? ...this is saddening ... to me, all of you are angels ...

The other day, i asked one student, "why don't you greet the teachers?". Guess what was the answer i got? Kenji: "we only greet people who deserve to be greeted...", my god, what have we done to you to deserve this kind of treatment?

Then i summarised :

1. Blogging is a good way for you to let out yourself and express your feelings.

2. your EQ is very low, perhaps you are still too young and immature, everything seems not right to you, but remember, nobody owes you a cent, so why can't you just smile and greet people you meet? you will definitely look prettier and more charming.
